THE ABBEY OF MONT SAINT MICHEL

Dominating the fortified village and its charming alleys, the abbey bears witness to the mastery and know-how of the builders of the Middle Ages. Open to the public by the National Monuments Centre, it has more than 20 rooms, including a pre-Romanesque chapel, religious buildings, a Gothic ensemble nicknamed "The Wonder" and a flamboyant Gothic choir.

Over the centuries and depending on the fires, collapses, reconstructions, architectural choices or changes of function, the abbey has been transformed.

In 1874, the site was classified as a historic monument and since 1979, Mont-Saint-Michel as a whole (abbey, village, bay) has been inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. In 2017, the Centre des Monuments Nationaux welcomed 1,246,097 visitors compared to 1,174,079 visitors in 2016.
